Bowling

We took Michael bowling.  He loved it.  He especially loved cheering when people knocked down pins and booing the gutter balls. He would then run back and give everyone "five."

Popsicles

These two love to feed each other their food. The tastier, the more excited they are to put it into each others mouth. Michael has also tried to feed Ella his dinner when he does not want to eat it, but that is another story.

Ella One Year

Ella turned one about a month ago, but I guess this is what happens when a birthday coincides with moving. At least this way she got two 1st birthday parties.
Ella's 1st birthday party, second round.
Some things about Ella at one year old...
- coinciding with complete weaning, she is no longer overly attached to me. If there is a roomful of people, she will walk around and try to charm everyone in the room. But she still likes me best and I love that.
- also a nice result of weaning has been that she is an awesome eater. Her favorite foods are meat and fruit, often to the exclusion of all else. She's on the hunter-gatherer diet. Yogurt is usually the only dairy I can sneak in and I hope that it is enough, cause she usually won't take more than a sip of milk.
- she is starting to say a lot of words, especially ones that start with B. Her first word was "bump", her favorite is "bye-bye", and her most impressive one is "butterfly" (buh-uh-fuh). Lately she is obsessed with "eye" and likes to poke at them - on people, dolls, pictures, statues. She has pretty expressive jabbering and has quite a bit to say sometimes. She loves to pretend to talk on the phone. She's picked up on lots of sign language, but it's mostly animals and not much useful stuff.
- she likes to cuddle. It's everything I hoped for!
- she has a great attention span, is easy-going, is easy to take out to restaurants, is easy to have in church, is easy to feed, takes good naps, and is sleeping through the night even when we have switched time zones and houses and hotels like a million times in this last month. The only thing I can think of that she consistently hates is getting in her carseat, but even then, once she is in she is easy to travel with. Even at her worst, I can pretty much just laugh, because it is still like 10 levels easier than what I've already learned how to deal with from her big brother. I always am thinking "she is my heart", which sounds dumb but it's just what always comes into my head when I am with her or think about her. She is just the loveliest creature and adds a lot of wonderful to my life.
Living it up at the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown on her first birthday. Making all sorts of messes for room service to clean up.
Loving her first balloon from Godmother Anna.

Moving

I take this evanescence and lubricity of all objects, which lets them slip through our fingers then when we clutch hardest, to be the most unhandsome part of our condition.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Everything in Sweden is beautiful and bountiful in July. Friends have shown us a hundred kindness as we prepare to move. I know the in's and out's of the culture, of getting around, of the metric system. Of the recycling system! Sometimes I even think in Swedish phrases. We took a boat to an island in the archipelago last week, and knowing that we are about to move, I saw Stockholm's cityscape with fresh eyes. It's incredible. Hej då, Sweden. I'll miss you.

We will take Michael and Ella back here someday when they are old enough to appreciate it, and I think they will feel pride and wonder that they were born in such a gorgeous, cool country. We have a neighbor who always saw me at just the right moments - when I was out x-country skiing, or running, or biking, or walking my trash to the recycling bins - and she once told me "You're more Swedish than a Swede!" A simple remark, but I took the implicit message of it as a compliment, one I continue to relish in because I love the Swedish culture in so many ways.

I am so emotional this week. We leave in 3 days, and then, that's it. I keep grasping for ways to preserve our last three years here, but it's pretty much impossible, no matter how much cheap crap I buy in Gamla Stan.

On a positive note about moving, the sinks in our house are starting to have draining issues, and I totally don't care. Also, we had an encounter with a crotchety old lady yesterday and somehow moving seemed like a good way of dealing with it. Weeds, grow away! Snails, multiply and replenish! Rude clerk at the grocery store - so my baby cried, take it! Fleeing the country is pretty much my answer to anyone and anything obnoxious lately. We did eventually have to clean the tub though.
Andrea took this pic from the top of a tower.

I love this picture in so many ways. So much Swedishness in one little photo.

(I think Joy took this one.)

Midsummer, etc.

Rob and I raced the 5k at the midsummer celebration in Tyresta. He ran in a good time even while pushing the jogging stroller with both kids and got a post race interview for it. I let him push the stroller so that he'd have a good excuse when I beat him.

Michael loved the kids race.

Ella is in the crawl-into-everything stage. It's pretty darn cute the things I find her in.
Michael loves riding the train. We sold our car a few weeks ago and he keeps telling me he is sad that it is gone. So I remind him that we get to ride the bus and train everyday now because it is gone, and he'll go, oh, okay, I'm happy now.

"Hey Michael - Smile! Okay, with your eyes open."

"Now try again. Eyes open."

"Can you open your eyes and smile at the same time?" By this point, other passengers were trying to offer him advice as well.

Our friends The Aikens were super nice and hosted a goodbye party for us last weekend. Of course I forgot to take any pictures but this one. Ella was loooooooving the party - first a little girl brought her this entire plate of cookies. Later I shared some cake and soda with her. Later I found that another little girl had brought her a cupcake. She was just walking around as fast as I've ever seen her go and just giggling and giggling like she was on speed. It was pretty awesome.

Frozen Peas

Ella grabbed a bag of peas out of the freezer drawer that I didn't think she could reach. You would have thought she broke open a pinata, the way they flung all over, the way Smalls came running, and the way their faces lit up as they gobbled them up right off the ground.

Smalls has not been interested in peas for months, so yay! He shared some with me and they were really good, tasting more like a fresh pea from the garden than the way I am used to cooked peas. Who knew? Probably everyone but me.

Living Room/Bathroom

Michael watched an episode of Diego today, and this was the scene I returned to when I got out of the shower. He is such a guy. He dragged the potty in to the living room so that he wouldn't miss any of his precious Diego time while doing business. I know I'm sort of a t.v. nazi (he generally gets to watch one or two shows per week), but this really highlighted the fact and made me wonder if I need to lighten up on regulations around here.
Nah.

Colored Michaels

That is what Michael calls the photobooth app on the computer.  Basically, he could sit and take pictures of himself for HOURS, if we let him.  One day, I think he took over 80 pictures.  He has recently figured out how to take videos, which are pretty funny too.  As you can see, some of the pictures are in crazy colors, hence his name for it:  Colored Michaels.  These are some of our favorites:

2nd place

Michael's second favorite thing is the "Songify" app, where he can record himself, and then it gets played back in autotune.   I'd post his latest creation (which is awesome) but I don't know how to post a song to blogger.  Sorry.

Meeting Hillary Rodham Clinton

Secretary of State Clinton visited Sweden on Saturday and Sunday.  This was the first visit to Sweden by a U.S. Secretary of State in 35 years.  Needless to say, that made for a busy weekend at work.  The rest of the family was able to join in the "fun" when the Ambassador invited all of the Embassy families over to his house for a small reception with the Secretary on Sunday.  She took a picture with all the kids.  As you can see, Michael was super interested.  Ella was also on her best behavior (she is in the far right).  The last picture is my favorite.  We also taught Michael to be super pretentious and only say her entire name - so if you asked him who was visiting, he would say "Hillary Rodham Clinton."  When she was shaking hands with everyone and came over to shake his hand, he said "Hi, Hillary Rodham Clinton."  She laughed.  Thus upholding an important Candrian male tradition of making important people laugh when you meet them.

On the drive home, Michael told us "Hillary Rodham Clinton stole my juice. She put it on her stand. She should give it back."

Michael is in the blue shirt (front-left) acting like a monkey. Ella is in a red dress (back right corner) waving her hands in the air.

Hillary stopped to chat with Ella, who totally didn't care at all.

Lorena and Ella are the extras in back.

60 minutes: Tel Aviv

For any who happen to be interested, 60 minutes recently did a segment about Tel Aviv.
Here is the link: 60 Minutes on Tel Aviv, Israel

As I sit here cuddled up under a blanket at the end of May (I shake my fist at you, Sweden!), I am getting genuinely excited for the move and the new adventures. I can hardly wait to feel so hot that I'm ready to pass out. And then just at that moment I jump into the ocean water. Ahhhh. Just hoping that peace prevails. Rob's on that.

Stuff kids say

Today, Michael was learning how to climb a tree.  At one point he got stuck, and he turned to me and said "Dad, I'm difficulting."

Anything that happened in the past happened "lasterday."

The other day he saw the word "Too".  He said "Hey, its T-hundred."

Ella has a new high-pitch shriek she likes to use.  It's way worse then it sounds.

Siblings

He's already got her working for him.

A couple months ago we had some friends over who have a baby a little older than Ella. When they left, Michael became hysterical, sobbing and screaming, but he was too upset to understand. After a few minutes, we could make out some words between the sobs - ELLA! sob, sob STAY! sob sob sob WITH MOMMY! And we finally could piece together that he got the babies confused and thought they took Ella. It melted my heart.
